Over 100,000 people have taken part in GreenKayak’s free paddling initiative, proving that simple, hands-on action can drive real environmental change.
A milestone worth celebrating
We at GreenKayak, the Copenhagen-based environmental nonprofit organization, have reached a monumental milestone: 100,000 people from around the world have paddled for cleaner oceans across Europe. This is an incredible achievement for an initiative built on trust, community, and individual action. It proves that we, from near and far, want to take care of the environment, especially when it is accessible and fun!
Paddling With Purpose for Cleaner Oceans
Reaching 100,000 volunteers is more than just a mind-boggling number; it is a powerful testament that we want to take meaningful action for the environment that needs us now more than ever. This milestone shows that when opportunities to protect our oceans are made simple, accessible, fun, and citizen-driven, we step up and make a real difference together.
With more than 153,157 kilograms of trash collected from canals, waterways, rivers, and coastal waters across northern Europe, we have made a significant difference for the health of these ecosystems. While the contribution of a single one of us might be just a few kilos, together our small efforts add up to a mountain of trash! A giant mountain of trash, 153 tons of it, stacked in half-liter bottles would stretch more than 3,000 kilometers high, the same as 346 Mount Everests!
We extend heartfelt thanks to all our volunteers, partners, and local hosts who make this initiative possible. This milestone belongs to all of us: the volunteers who paddle for cleaner oceans, the partners who provide support and collaboration, and the local hosts who keep the kayaks ready for the next adventure. Together, we make impact possible.
Our massive success reflects a growing movement of everyday people like us choosing to get our hands dirty (literally), to be involved rather than complacent and apathetic, for our world. Our initiative has grown exponentially, with more of us joining each year and new locations consistently opening, including our expansion into northern Germany this past year. And we’re not stopping there. Our founders Tobias and Oke have their sights set on continual expansion, turning GreenKayak into a truly global movement. As climate action demands urgent solutions, we are proving that empowering people with engaging and practical ways to act can unlock a wave of positive change.
Voices from our community
In celebration of this achievement, we reflected together on the impact of 100,000 of us paddling for cleaner waters. Our most active volunteer, Mia Gjelstrup, who has taken 100 trips and collected 464 kilos of trash, shares:
“I love paddling through the city while cleaning the harbor and raising awareness about ocean waste. Since my first trip in 2019, it’s been amazing to see the water get cleaner, awareness grow, and now to celebrate 100,000 paddlers joining this fun and important mission.”
Our partners, who support us and made this achievement possible, echoed that sense of shared excitement! Jonathan Carter, Health and Safety Manager at DHL Copenhagen Hub, adds:
“At DHL we are thrilled to celebrate 100,000 volunteers with GreenKayak. This incredible achievement shows the power of people and partnerships coming together to protect our environment.”
Paddling toward the future
Looking ahead, we are more committed than ever. The achievement of 100,000 paddlers only fuels our drive to grow the movement and welcome the next 100,000 on board. With plans to expand, forge new partnerships, and strengthen existing ones, we aim to make it even easier for anyone to experience the beauty of nature on a kayak while taking real action to protect it. Our goal is to inspire even more volunteers, collect more trash in cities especially affected by water pollution, and continue serving as a role model for how to create free, engaging experiences that give back to the planet.
This milestone is not the finish line– it’s our launchpad for what’s to come!
